What we know about the Baltimore bridge collapse

I can tell you what we know so far about the Baltimore bridge collapse:

Incident:

A large cargo ship, the Dali, collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday, March 26th, 2024

The ship reportedly lost power before hitting a support column, causing a significant portion of the bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River.

Casualties:

Tragically, six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time are presumed dead.

Thankfully, two people were rescued from the water.

Impact:

This incident has severely disrupted traffic flow in Baltimore as the bridge is a major artery.

The collapse could also have significant economic consequences, potentially impacting the port's operations for months.

Investigation:

The cause of the power loss on the ship and the full extent of the damage are still under investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is likely looking into various factors, including the ship's operational records, the bridge's maintenance history, and weather conditions at the time.

Current Status:

As of today, March 27th, the search and rescue mission has transitioned to a recovery effort for the missing workers.

Authorities are working to determine the best course of action for repairs and rebuilding the bridge.
